Rogue Scrap Dealers.
We would like to draw your attention to an increase in the number of scrap dealers who have been traveling the area touting for business. Typically vehicles are Ford Transit Flatbacks or similar, one of these vehicles being a White Nissan Pickup reg V865NMA which was seen in Sowerby near Thirsk recently.
On the afternoon on 19th May we received a report of a suspicious vehicle in our area loaded with scrap. The occupants were going from house to house asking for any scrap metal. Officers attended and searched the vehicle. They found that the men where also taking other items that they did not have permission to remove. All the occupants were arrested and taken to Northallerton police station. Further enquiries and searches were carried out on our behalf by Cleveland Police. As a result one person was charged and will appear at court. Other enquiries are continuing. Please continue to look out for such vehicles and people and pass on sightings as soon as you can to North Yorkshire Polce on 0845 60 60 247.

B.T. scam
Please be aware that there is a scam doing the rounds at the moment. People have been contacted by telephone by persons who say they are from BT and tell them that they have an overdue bill and want payment. To prove their story they tell the person their telephone will be cut off, the person then tries to make an outgoing call but the line will not work. They are then re-contacted and the person believes them to be genuine and gives details of their credit card. PLEASE be aware that BT do not contact customers in such a way nor do they cut off the line and re-connect, PLEASE do not give credit card details over the telephone.

AUTUMN 2007
As the daylight hours decrease, criminal activites tend to grow and it well worth reminding
people of sensible precautions aimed at keeping you and your possessions safe.

1. Keep doors locked, even when you are in the house. Do not leave keys in sight or
within reach. Make sure sheds and garages are secure. At night, draw the curtains and
leave a light on if you go out.
2. Have nothing to do with 'cold callers'. So called jewellery sellers are the latest
scam.
Do not open the door to persons unknown to you, unless expected by prior
arrangement. Let nobody into you home unless you know them. If they are from the utility
services, check their proof of identity. If they are genuine, they will not mind you
checking with their employer, but do not use a number they offer.
3. Keep your eyes open for any unusual activity or vehicles. Do not get involved but take
note of the vehicle registration numbers and report anything suspicious to the police on
01609 789473 or 0845 6060247.
In case of emergency - use 999.
