We are delighted that you have chosen to take a stroll through our enduring village . .

Crakehall Hall

. . . . just 4 miles from the A1 on the main A684 road from Bedale to the Lake District.

Crakehall Hall Village Inn

Great and Little Crakehall - now known more generally as
Crakehall,
are situated at the gateway to Wensleydale, nestling between two beautiful National Parks,
making an ideal centre from which to explore the
Dales and Moors of North Yorkshire.

(In the Summer of 2006, North Yorkshire was voted the "Most Beautiful County in England")

Within the village there are a number of holiday cottages,  bed & breakfast accommodations
and caravan sites as well as many well known nearby attractions within about 30 minutes drive.

Although North Yorkshire has many attractive villages, Crakehall has rightly been described as the prettiest of those in the lower Dales. The five-acre village green with its giant sycamores and lime trees is dominated by Crakehall Hall (pictured above) and is enclosed by stone built cottages dating back to the 1750's. Overlooked by the village Inn, the green hosts both cricket and quoits to provide the typical village green scene in summer.

What is thought to be the first written record of Crakehall appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086.
In 1976, Mr Harry Stembridge, a long time resident, published a
'History of Crakehall'
containing many interesting facts, figures and dates!
Now, in keeping with modern technology, the village history is the subject of a new website created by Ian Hancock that contains links to 'Crakehall Marriage registers from 1843 to 1923' and 'Crakehall Tithe Award 1839'
- to mention just a couple.

Opposite is an extract from his entry in our Visitors Book . . .

A picture of the Bay Horse Inn should appear here!
Above shows Mr & Mrs Stelling and the Old Bay horse.
Ian Hancocks website is well worth viewing as it is constantly being updated.
. . . I spent many happy holidays as a child in Crakehall when my grandmother, Clara Hancock lived at "The Bungalow" overlooking the bridge, and my great aunt, Gertrude Stelling, was landlady of the Bay Horse.
. . . My father and I spent a lot of time researching the history of the village and I am in the process of putting this material on my website

at 'glenlodge.me.uk'.

Visitors Book entry
